Helleborus atrorubens (Slovenia and Croatia open woods and upland pasture land with Anemone nemorosa, Galanthus nivalis, Pulmonaria saccharata, Epimedium alpinum and Erythronium dens-canis) (Acaulescent)

 

A deciduous species with small 3-5cm flowers on tall widely branched stems in February and March. The flower colour is generally a combination of purple and green, with more emphasis on purple on the outside, and predominantly green within. Slow, but easy to establish, requiring a humus rich, well-drained neutral soil in a sunny or slightly shady position. 30-35cm (12-14ins)
