List of Helleborus Growers and Breeders

By Howard Drury

Although the popularity of hellebores has increased dramatically in recent years and you will often see Hellebores for sale in virtually every garden centre or nursery there are few actual Hellebore breeders in the Uk Several have retired or the nursery closed and i am aware this list is not definitive. There is also a kind of chain of breeding where  Hellebores are introduced that do not appear to be improvements but more mass produced older breeding lines from the top breeders. I am aware that Ashwood Nurseries no longer offer seed for sale but some smaller nurseries supposed to be offering seed of the Ashwood lines, something I do not think is really fair to breeders.

In some cases micro propagated plants are sold and while these are absolutely identical to the parent there are some issues with plants not being very robust or hardy as the parents have been from less hardy lines including Helleborus lividus. In other cases younger unflowered seedlings are offered for sale, I much prefer to see the individual in flower and this can mean the grower devoting three years or more before a plant flowers making them quite expensive.

On line sales are now available at many nurseries and most ship out exactly the same plant you would buy if visiting that nursery, there is something about selecting your own from a batch of seedlings, your personal appreciation of the particular plant and its merits.
